FRP Grating for Schools

Slip-Resistant FRP Grating for School Accessways

Classroom accessways are some of the most heavily used pedestrian areas in any school. They handle constant foot traffic in all kinds of weather, so they need to provide reliable footing and withstand years of daily use with minimal maintenance.

At a Canterbury-based school, FRP Ltd supplied and helped deliver a grating solution designed for exactly that environment.

The challenge: safe footing in all weather

School walkways face a demanding combination of conditions. They see high volumes of students, staff and visitors throughout the day; they’re exposed to rain and damp for much of the year, and they can’t be closed off for regular repairs or resurfacing. Any surface used in these areas must remain slip-resistant when wet and hold up over the long term without becoming a maintenance burden.

The solution: FRP grating across accessways, ramps and landings

For this project, FRP grating was installed across the classroom accessways, ramps, and stair landings to create a durable, slip-resistant surface for everyone moving through the school.

Fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) grating is well suited to busy, weather-exposed pedestrian areas. Its textured surface provides grip underfoot, and because the material won’t rot or corrode, it continues to perform in wet and outdoor conditions where other materials can break down over time.

Anti-slip stair nosing for added safety on steps

Alongside the grating, FRP anti-slip stair nosing was supplied to improve footing on the school’s steps. Stair edges are a common slip-and-trip point in high-traffic areas, and anti-slip nosing gives a defined, grippy edge that helps students and staff move up and down safely — an easy addition that complements the grating across the wider accessways.

Why FRP grating works for schools

FRP grating offers several practical advantages for school environments:

  • Slip-resistant in wet conditions – reliable grip underfoot, even in rain.
  • Won’t rot or corrode – stands up to moisture and outdoor exposure.
  • Low maintenance – no regular resurfacing or specialist upkeep required.
  • Lightweight and easy to install – simpler to handle and fit than many alternatives.
  • Suitable for high-traffic pedestrian areas – built for daily use by students, staff, and visitors.

Together, these qualities make FRP grating a sensible choice where safety and durability both matter and where maintenance downtime needs to be kept to a minimum.

A practical long-term solution beyond the classroom

While this project focused on a school, the same benefits apply well beyond the classroom. From schools and public facilities to community buildings, FRP grating provides a practical long-term solution wherever slip resistance and durability are essential.
